Liliane Fund Foundation
The Liliane Fund shows that one child: 'You are worth the trouble'
Each year, Corporate Express uses its corporate Christmas card to support a charity by selecting a project that will be a focal point for fundraising activities. With the Christmas card for the year 2007 Corporate Express is supporting the Liliane Fund Foundation. The girl on the photo, Valentine Kige, was born in 1998 with a deformity. Her disability is club feet which were corrected and put on braces. Valentine lives with her mother and two brothers in Kajiado, Kenya. She goes to school and receives physiotherapy in the Child Care Centre of Kajiado. The director of this centre, Daniel Ole Sapayia, is mediator of the Liliane Fund and is disabled himself as well. Because of his handicap he can convince the masaai parents about the importance of education for their childerens future.
Liliane Fund
The aim of the Liliane Fund Foundation is to make medical and social rehabilitation possible in developing countries for children and young people with a handicap. This gives these children a perspective for a better future.
‘Show that one child: You are worth the trouble.’
A special feature is that initiatives take place in cooperation with local contact people through direct, small-scale made-to-measure assistance which supports the personal growth of the child and helps him to integrate into society. The help includes (para-)medical treatment, surgery, appliances, (special) training, courses and help with the establishment of an independent existence.
Rights of the child
On 20 November 1989, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This Convention states, among other things, that children have the right to equal opportunity, proper nutrition, security and protection, proper accommodation and opportunities to play and receive education. In a separate article the Convention states that children with a handicap also have the right to special care and attention and to training that matches their specific needs. In practice, it is specifically the rights of children with a handicap which are violated every day on a major scale. They are more vulnerable because of their age and children with a handicap are at most risk because less importance is attached to their interests. It is for these children that the Liliane Fund does its work.
